The Difference

Sad GirlWhat am I doing that makes a difference in this world? How to find my way? Where is my destiny?

I hear a voice say: "Help others!" But isn't that a convenient substitute: alleviate others' pain so that you don't have to think about your own life?

The truth is: it doesn't matter. Or it does?

On Thursday I participate in a workshop for potential ICRC delegates... I'm curious how they feel about idealism and thoughts of improving the world.

I don't know what the game is... but it's my turn to play.

Until the day I die

spoon (1k image)- "If the Absolute Reality is omnipotent, omnipresent, the source of everything, why did it bother to create the universe in the first place?", asks the seeker of purpose.

- "For the sake of purposeful play. All life is the purposeful play of the Creator.", answers the teacher.

(leaves a bad aftertaste... would somebody define purpose for me? I hear somebody say, "There is no spoon.")

Monkey in the cage

I heard my Dad say he hates theme parks like nothing else, but likes natural parks. According to him, theme parks are the embodiment of artificiality and are just mindless entertainment, whereas zoos show nature and are "real".

I disagree.

Theme parks show reality, happy people trying to be happy by acting happy and putting on a big childish smile or painting one on their face if they can't manage. Big worries are replaced by small worries, such as the number of hours to wait in the queue, whether the hot dogs are juicy and how to get a hug from the Mickey Mouse man. Theme parks highlight life at its best: the constant flight from reality and the pretence of happiness.

Zoos are horrible places: they capture nature in a illusion of natural, removing from view all of nature that man fears: smell, disease, sex, pain and death. In this prison it is man who's the monkey in the cage, who can't see the real world, who is trapped inside and doesn't know he is.

I love theme parks. I feel home among peers and smile all the time.

A big childish smile.

Twenty thousand days

I've heard people spend a great amount of energy trying to discourage me from taking risks: on my safety, health or friendships - but also on my professional, studying and personal choices.

Careful, it's risky!

The greatest risk of all is no risk at all - because you risk missing your life.

At age 25, you should have another 20'000 days in front of you. They count.

Incredulous

How incredulous!

I had a visitor in Keith Barrows and his Terran Institute, working on growing the circle of space visionaries.

Zorch! Also visiting is Offworlder, a graffiti artist who takes pictures of graffitis on trains. I am eagerly waiting to see some more of his pictures - and be aware he might be posting soon! Let's wait for a really funky photoblog!

And I've somehow grabbed the attention of Marcia, an honoured bubble in the Abscond.org fizzy drink (quite honestly my favourite fizz on the whole wide web).

A400MLast, it looks like my chances of joining my dream company are a step closer from reality, which would propell me right into the space business and all the great toys adults spend their time building, flying and exploding.

Long life to you all, I say, and may your bubbles never burst.

Space wholesale!

Mars, Inc.I had been expecting this:

A group of Russian space experts says it is planning a privately financed manned mission to Mars.

Aerospace Systems, a commercial company seeking to fund the project using private capital, suggested it could involve a reality TV show. The project should happen within 10 years and cost $3-5bn.

The plan is for six cosmonauts to take a three-year round trip, including several months exploring Mars. The spaceship would be equipped with its own garden, to supply them with fresh fruit and vegetables. The experts said the craft would use parts already tried and tested at the International Space Station.

Martian landscapeMr Uspensky said the plan - of which the estimated were given as a fraction of those of US plans for a manned mission to Mars - had "good business potential". A real-time TV serial could be made from the lives of the crew, made up of both men and women, which could provide a return on investments in the project, the experts said.

Earlier this week the US authorities issued a licence for the first time to a company hoping to make a manned sub-orbital space flight in a privately owned rocket.

God save the Queen!

God Save The Queen"Bien sûr, nous ne serons jamais d'accord sur tout, mais la vie manquerait de sel - et le reste du monde y perdrait - si nous ne nous accordions pas de temps en temps le loisir d'endosser nos caricatures nationales."
