Hurricane Rita

Rita is heading for the Gulf Coast of the US, with meteorologists anticipating significant impact on buildings and infrastructure once it hits land. Energy companies have had to shut down some of their activities in the region to protect staff and assets, affecting the oil price.

But the real Rita is not off the coast of Texas, but in Bishkek, where everything swirls around her in an inescapable dance. She captured me, and still does, distance and time notwithstanding.

Goodbye iPod

After going through 2 replacement iPods in as many weeks, I have a clear conscience to finally abandon my iPod mini. I am now using Sony's thing (no idea how it's called), heavily advertised all over in Dubai in shops and on giant billboards. I first used it at the V2005 festival where Sony has free beach chairs in which to listen to music. The Sony things isn't too badly designed, it's quite small, but its software is awfully slow and messy. The overall experience is not as bad as Apple's, so I guess I'm happy. And if I keep using the white earphones, nobody will even notice my brand allegiance has changed!

Back in London now... looking forward to two family weekends, the first in Bristol and the second in Geneva with my uncle Mino (a.k.a. 'The Shark') and lovely cousine Lulu.

Dubai

I guess it's called Western life with Arabic characteristics. Despite being unable to walk outdoors for more than 5min without suffering from a heat stroke, I am enjoying the aseptisized malls and public areas and am about to try out its night life! Loads of beautiful people here - will be tough for me to get used to London again!

Delhi

Lahore Mosque After visiting Chandigarh, Shimla, Jaipur and Agra, I am sitting in Delhi waiting for my flight to Dubai. Sitting in an air-conditioned internet cafe is a relief from the scorching heat. I must admit to being somewhat happy that my trip is coming to an end - interacting with people on the street whom we knew were almost certainly trying to cheat us is an exhausting job. It makes me a little sad that it hid from view much of the beauty of India's culture, past and present. There is a dead dog lying in the street, it's carcass being devoured by birds. Nobody seems bothered. But I have seen people lying nearly like that in other places.

Now I will be enjoying two days of luxury and idleness in UAE (totally cultureless, I guess) before flying back to London.
