Paul Hill

STS-114 Flight Director Paul Hill on his future plans and goals - he's my man!

Flight Director Paul Hill (NASA)"Like many people in NASA, I want to help put man back on the moon and then get out of low earth orbit permanently. Today, that means finishing the construction of the International Space Station. I am also very interested in revolutionary shifts in launch technology which could significantly reduce the cost and risk of reaching orbit, ultimately leading to real space tourism."

And his advice to young people:

"Take math and science seriously. Take English just as seriously, because if you can't communicate, it doesn't matter how good you are at the technical work. Become comfortable doing and learning new things, that could mean sports or orienteering skills, scouting, debating teams, etc. The people who stand out in our business are the types who aren't afraid to try things and have talents in many of them.

If you're going to spend any of your time on something, make it worth the price and always do the best you can. Believe in yourself. Never compromise on issues of integrity and principle. Don't be afraid to step out of line and try something other folks won't or can't."

Liftoff for Discovery!

Discovery STS-114Ever since that fateful Saturday, 1 February, 2003, as news broke through of Columbia's break-up on re-entry, I have missed the hours spent living with live mission coverage unfolding in the background of my computer screen. The excitement of somehow being part of every mission by watching construction progress on the ISS never waned. I have always felt the vulnerability that the astronauts are exposed to everytime they break through the confines of Earth's surface. From launch to landing, they rely on a complex chain of a collaborative work by the brightest engineers and most skilled suppliers in the world. But despite their best efforts, things can fail. Now the shuttle is back up and I shall be watching it fly above our heads and on the web during spacewalks. Awesome!

Choses secrètes

Choses secretes"The delectably twisted fable centers on two penniless but shapely young women who set out to better their social station by manipulating men." Secret Things, from Jean-Claude Brisseau, was showing at the cine lumieres. A great movie to make a friend discover French cinema! (she told me she would have preferred to watch Fantastic Four, to my horror)

Flat

Not a good day to go flat hunting in Central London. It took me 90min to travel from Paddington to Kentish Town. I was on the wrong bus which ended going in the right way thanks to a diversion. Luckily no one seems to have been seriously hurt. But I just found out that something terrible has happened to one of my friends from Abscond.org. I feel for you Marcia... Im so sorry.

In silence

London in silence"Film that guy, he looks emotional", said the producer from a Canadian TV channel, coverning the 2-minute silence on Trafalgar Square commemorating last week's tragic events that affected so many. As I was standing with so many others, the media world was capturing the moment and broadcasting it to millions of viewers. But despite so much public scrutiny, it was an intimate moment for Londoners to remember the bombs that blew up so close to our lives. I keep wondering why Baker Street wasn't affected, and that if it had, how hard it would have been for all of us to escape.

Rencontre

Change the world

Live 8 LondonThe G8 meeting kicked off Saturday afternoon in Hyde Park, working on solving poverty in Africa. Behind multiple police cordons, barricades and high walls, a group of unelected people was listening to pop rock stars and trying to change the world. Instead of spending money on tickets, they had spent it on SMS messages and were rewarding their kids with burgers and ice cream. A great number of us who attempted to take part in the debate about poverty were kept away by riot police. A few pranksters pretended to climb over the fences, causing panic amongst police who didn't know how to react. A security staff, who was sitting under a tree, even stood up, a confused expression on her face betraying her inadequacy.

Finch at the AstoriaUnfortunately, the park was too small for everybody to change the world, so I went to the day's real big rock event, Finch playing at the Astoria. The gig was breathtaking (not the least because it was so hot and sweaty). I have never been so wet before, keeping up with the pumped up crowd, as the performance was a permanent rush of adrenaline right until the lights went on again. The end was so abrupt that many of us didn't believe it was actually over, even after the security staff were shoving us towards the doors. That's when Randy went to a group of fan and gave out plectra, which was really cool. He changed our world, for sure.
