Full Steam Into 2005

Welcome to 2005! A year ago, I was sipping Russian tea at home in Geneva, closing 2003 very simply. This year, I am with my English family in Bristol, celebrating New Year in a full house, with dozens of people and so many crates of drinks.

A year ago, this blog had only started days before, with the inspiration from Max Munton's, which is now closed. I had also been motivated to create something as hip and funky as James Darling's (Abscond.org), which I had found by looking at Liv's blog on the Guardian Awards (kindly hosted by James). James's blog is still just as hip, while mine never matched his hipness (I have only nice pictures). Next year, I expect to write about more adventurous things, because there'll be more of that around.

2004 was a partial success. I graduated with good results (but missed by personal objective by less than 1%, a big frustration). I started in a job and did come a tiny bit closer to identifying something I enjoy and am passionate about. I met so many interesting and nice people this year. But but but... I want more!

2005 will be bigger: more money, more freedom, more friends, more travel, more action and adventure and more passion in all I do... 2004 was grey and cold, 2005 will be red and hot!

I wish you all much happiness for 2005 - and a good health still, because it's important.

Phil

My Swissiland

Getty Images (c)Much has been achieved in 2004 in the area of human spaceflight, from US President Bush announcing his country's vision for space exploration to private companies competing to offer suborbital flights for paying passengers. The Economist reviews this year's successes and recent developments.

SofaToday started with the deafening sound of the alarm bell, announcing the delivery of my friend's much anticipated sofa, which was immediately put to good use as can be seen from the picture. While hearing about the benefits of ultra wide armrests, I learned how to best choose such an essential part of a living room and how to try them in the shop to ensure it fits all its would-be users. Be warned if you see me sleeping in couches at Ikea next time you shop.

Suvretta House, St. MoritzI then had the great pleasure of sharing a meal with Mr. Mullah - food is the best way to rekindle a good friendship. In the middle of his Lernphase, preparing for his university finals, Mr. Mullah was kind enough to grant me a few hours from his busy work schedule - most of which were wasted by my late arrival. (I was negotiating treacherous icy roads with summer tires, an exercise I don't recommend on an empty stomach.) A perfect lunch in a perfect location, after nearly 500km drive.

St. Moritz with Patrick M. MüllerWe met in St. Moritz, a beautiful resort in Eastern Switzerland close to Davos and Klosters, where the royal princes take their ski holidays. Everything is of high quality, with friendly staff, perfect service and great food, a real little paradise. It's this that I miss so much when I am in London... nothing in England can come close to it.

Hello World (nee how)

The OIn Lucern yesterday surrounded by Chinese tourists busy with their cameras. Today, I'm off to Zürich to celebrate a successful year with a friend (see past entry) and tomorrow in St. Moritz celebrating another's future success and anticipated graduation in March.

It's been a year since I started this site (see first entry, 98 entries in 366 days, or more than 1 every 4 days). It's survived quite a few changes, from its author leaving university to his working in a demanding job in London to it being spammed to death by worthless individuals.

I strongly feel this blog needs a new orientation (or any orientation at all) and I'm thinking what it could be. News about space (such as the successful separation from the Huygens probe or the latest developments in the Shuttle return to flight project) will always be part of it, but there is only so much to report. So expect more from me in the next few days... (or a notice of close down.)

Stop!

I've stopped blogging. Not consciously, not deliberately, but it's a fact. The only times I access my blog is to fight the constant flow of comments being spammed by junk advertisers. Blog spamming seems to be the new thing.

Phil drivingWhich is not fair to my visitors, because I actually do have some. Some even have names, like the delightful people at Abscond.org and even a few of my friends (who tend to use pen names when signing comments). And they don't spam my blog. So here I am again. And now watch this, it's me doing what I enjoy so much: driving with my Ray Ban. (I rule, you said it!)

A few cool things have been happening recently, which include meeting with Dr Shirin Akiner, the leading British scholar on Central Asia, at Chatham House, on the future of democracy in Kazakhstan (don't say, 'What future?', because then there won't be one).

Then I must admit that mentoring my 14-year-old mentee at the London Nautical School has been entertaining, especially hearing his peers' views of other pupils from "minorities" (those who happen to produce the music they listen to and whose ancestors made the art that is being studied and reproduced in class). I'm supposed to act as a role model, but if they cannot learn from the very artists whose origins they despise, why should the kids listen to me? Immigration, a problem in this country? Is it da problem, nigga?

Checking the drums for Alter BridgeAnd I must say, I've had a pretty bad run with pictures recently, so none of the St. Martin Pig Feast, which was a fantastic chance of meeting with old friend from Uni, eating more pig than I've ever done in my life and discovering that all the myths and jokes about Jura, they're all true! No pictures either from Alter Bridge's concert last week (Creed is born again!) at the Mean Fiddler, but for the guy who adjusts the drums before the band starts playing. I wish I could know more about them, they so often seem like they could play better than most of the bands that need their skills.

And finally, I've discovered a fantastic store near my work, with Russian produces (kleb, crab, fish), plenty of Russian DVDs, and they even sell driving licenses I was told. For an instant, I can believe I am in Moscow, until the moment I step outside and am reminded that unfortunately, I'm still in London.

Christmas is coming up soon, and even if I've mentally managed to abolish it, it's still there. So no plans for me, except pretending I've abolished it. It's gone. Is it? I should convert to some Christmasless religion. Or change jobs. Or get caught in a strike. More soon from me...
